It adds a review of data sources and each platform’s specific controls. Accessibility does not guarantee inclusion in an answer.

This planning edition for 2027 was reviewed on 14 October 2026. It includes all 35 inventory checks, ordered before the FAQ. For a diagnosis with owners and evidence, see our technical GEO audit service.

What to check first in a technical GEO audit

Choose three commercially important pages and record the question each must answer. Save the URL, received HTML, date and environment before making changes. A product page that fails to load specifications and a service page isolated from navigation need different remedies.

Access blockers first: response errors, accidental noindex, incorrect canonicals and missing essential content.

Interpretation next: conflicting facts, links between versions and information understandable only from an image.

Then maintenance: owner, updates, regression checks and alerts. Budget should follow impact and dependencies.

The 35 technical checks

1. Verify that important URLs respond correctly

Start with HTTP status codes. Canonical pages should return 200. Review unnecessary 3xx responses, chains, loops, soft 404s, 5xx errors and behaviour that changes by user-agent. An unstable URL is a poor source.

2. Audit robots.txt deliberately

Understand what is blocked and why. Do not copy rules from another site. Ensure CSS, JavaScript and resources necessary to interpret content are not accidentally blocked. Document deliberate crawler-specific decisions.

3. Review meta robots and X-Robots-Tag

An accidental noindex template can remove hundreds of pages from circulation. Include HTML, PDFs and other documents because X-Robots-Tag can be applied at server level.

4. Check canonicals

The canonical should represent the genuinely preferred version. Review parameters, facets, pagination, translations and pages canonicalising to a different URL without reason. Contradictory canonicals weaken the signal about which content is primary.

5. Evaluate rendering

Compare initial HTML, rendered DOM and visible content. If the primary meaning appears only after client-side calls or interaction, retrieval may be less robust. Keep titles, definitions, core copy and internal links accessible.

6. Audit navigation and internal linking

Important pages should be discoverable through stable HTML links. Avoid relying solely on internal search, JavaScript events or menus that do not expose URLs. Link architecture expresses semantic relationships.

7. Review depth

A strategic page buried eight clicks deep may receive weaker internal signals. There is no magic number, but pathways should reflect importance. Use hubs to connect services, sectors, products and resources.

8. Control duplicate URLs

Parameters, filters, print views, persistent UTMs, slash variants and syndicated content can multiply equivalent URLs. Define canonicalisation, redirects or blocking based on the specific case.

9. Audit hreflang

International versions should reference one another reciprocally and point to indexable canonical URLs. Review language, region and x-default where appropriate. Do not use hreflang between pages that are not equivalent.

10. Check sitemaps

Include only canonical URLs you want indexed. Separate types when useful for diagnostics and maintain meaningful lastmod data if it can be managed accurately. Redirects and noindex pages create sitemap noise.

11. Review structured data

Schema should represent visible entities and content. Check errors, identifiers, relationships and consistency. Organization, Person, Product, Service and Article are useful when they match the site’s real model.

12. Use persistent entity identifiers

When using @id, keep identifiers stable and relationships clear. Avoid generating a different identifier for the same organisation on every template without a reason.

13. Keep key data outside images

Prices, specifications, names, dates, locations and important comparisons should exist as accessible text or markup. A table converted into an image is difficult to reuse.

14. Audit PDFs

Decide which PDFs should be indexed, which are supporting assets and which contain information that should also exist in HTML. Review titles, links, versions and duplicates. Old PDFs can continue surfacing for years.

15. Review API-loaded content

Catalogues, prices, stock, reviews and directories may arrive through APIs. Check what happens when they fail, whether content is retrievable and whether caching exposes stale data. Define the source of truth.

16. Evaluate performance and stability

Core Web Vitals and performance are not GEO by themselves, but slow experiences and unstable rendering affect crawling and use. Reduce unnecessary scripts, oversized images and dependencies that block content.

17. Control consent and tags

A misconfigured CMP can block essential functionality or fire analytics before consent. Separate necessary content, measurement and advertising. Verify behaviour by region.

18. Review accessibility

Headings, labels, keyboard navigation, alt text, tables and contrast improve user experience and encourage more structured content. Accessibility should not be a final-stage add-on.

19. Examine server logs

Logs show which crawlers request which URLs, how frequently and which errors they encounter. They do not replace Search Console or GEO tools, but they provide evidence of actual access.

20. Monitor 404s and redirects

External links and AI answers may continue pointing to old URLs. Maintain redirects when a true equivalent exists and repair broken internal links.

21. Audit feeds and endpoints

Product feeds, RSS, public APIs and specialised sitemaps may act as additional sources. Keep them consistent with the website and avoid exposing private or stale information.

22. Review content security

A compromised website can generate spam, cloaking and fake pages that damage entity representation. Monitor unexpected changes, users, plugins and files.

23. Create a canonical source of corporate facts

For critical information—name, address, legal entity, services, team and statistics—define where it is maintained. This reduces divergence across templates and channels.

24. QA with real questions

Do not audit URLs alone. Select important questions and identify which pages and passages could answer them. This connects the technical layer to the generative experience you want to improve.

25. Document and prioritise

Classify issues by impact: critical access blocks, entity ambiguity, indexation loss, inaccessible content, duplication or minor improvements. Technical GEO should produce an executable backlog rather than 300 warnings with no context.

26. Review CDN, WAF and caching behaviour

A CDN or firewall can serve different HTML, block crawlers, cache stale responses or introduce challenges. Test behaviour from different locations and user-agents. Define which pages can be cached, for how long and how caches are purged when critical facts change.

Security systems should not be disabled for GEO. They should protect the site without making legitimate public content inaccessible.

27. Include staging and deployment in QA

Many issues begin when staging moves to production: inherited noindex, canonicals pointing to the test domain, blocked robots or assets using internal URLs. Create an automated pre-release checklist and a post-release check covering indexability, links, schema, analytics and sitemaps.

28. Check parity between users and crawlers

Avoid serving materially different primary content to bots without a legitimate reason. Geolocation, personalisation and experiments can create variants that obscure the canonical page. Document rules and keep a stable version of the main content.

29. Monitor template changes

A theme, CMS or component update can remove schema, alter headings or break links across hundreds of URLs. Add regression tests for semantic elements, not visual screenshots alone. Technical controls should catch these changes before production.

30. Define useful alerts

Monitor shifts from 200 to 5xx, growth in noindex pages, sitemap errors, missing canonicals, sudden loss of indexable URLs and 404 spikes. Do not treat every warning as an emergency. Classify alerts by impact so teams know what requires action.

31. Maintain architecture documentation

Document rendering, redirects, language handling, feeds, schema and data sources. When teams change, this prevents a local optimisation from breaking a decision that had a broader architectural reason.

32. Add observability around critical changes

Do not wait for a visibility drop to reveal a problem. Version robots.txt, templates, canonical rules, schema and sitemaps, and alert when they change outside a planned deployment. If a plugin or release alters hundreds of pages, the team should know before the change becomes an indexation incident.

33. Audit content by source type

Classify corporate pages, products, services, news, documentation, resources and UGC. Each type has different technical requirements. Old news may expire; entity pages need stability; products need stock and attribute synchronisation. Technical GEO should reflect the role of each content source.

34. Include public APIs in the inventory

Some organisations expose facts through endpoints, feeds or technical documentation. Review authentication, rate limits, sensitive data, versioning and consistency with the website. A stale public endpoint can become a contradictory source.

35. Define closure criteria

An issue is not resolved because “the error disappeared”. Recrawl, validate headers, canonical, schema, sitemap and indexability, then check relevant queries. Record closure evidence so the same problem does not return in the next deployment.

Turn the checklist into an executable brief

For each issue record the affected page, observed behaviour, consequence for the buyer, owner and closure test. Separate diagnosis, implementation and validation in the scope: an audit does not automatically include changes to your CMS, CDN or catalogue.

Example closure test: if a specification appeared only after a button click, document where it was absent and check the published page again after the fix. Keep the original observation and result. A code change alone does not close the task.

Measure the work after deployment

Repeat the checks on the same pages under the same conditions. Record indexing changes and commercial queries in Search Console, then compare visits and received enquiries in analytics or your CRM. A single AI answer is an observation, not proof of causality or sales.

For an assessment, send the domain, three priority pages, language and market, CMS, observed symptom and next release date. Request a technical assessment or start with a visibility audit if you have not located the gap.

Frequently asked questions

Does it replace technical SEO?

No. The same inventory can cover access, content and maintenance without two projects repeating tests. Platform-specific work should address a defined need.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema?

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode require no new AI files or special markup. Check current requirements before buying an implementation.

Does allowing GPTBot enable ChatGPT Search visibility?

These are independent decisions: OAI-SearchBot is for search and GPTBot concerns content that may be used for training. Define a policy for each purpose.

Should we unblock every bot?

No. Document purpose and expected access. Do not disable a firewall to chase a citation; inspect requests and rules with the responsible team.

Is implementation included?

Agree it explicitly: pages, systems, access, owners and validation. Ask for deliverables that are separate from the findings list.

When will we see results?

Technical checks follow deployment. Indexing and visibility require later observation and depend on third parties; no date or position is guaranteed.

Sources and review

Documentation checked on 14 October 2026: <a
