A useful GEO audit report tells a team what to change, who owns the work and how the handover will be checked. An excellent cover is welcome. Development still needs a URL, an observation and an acceptance test. Recommendations such as “improve authority” need another step before someone can estimate the work or decide whether it is finished.
This GEO audit report template for 2027 organises that handover. It includes an evidence register, prioritisation criteria, three fictional development tickets and a real public-HTML sample collected in October 2026. The year identifies the planning edition. To define an engagement, explore our technical GEO audit and implementation service.
Start with important pages and buying decisions
Define the market, languages and priority pages. A business might need to explain a specialism, support a supplier comparison or correct corporate information. Those objectives need different sources and observations. Write down the decision a prospective buyer should be able to make from each page.
Name included systems, available access and sampling dates. Examining public HTML does not cover server logs, Search Console or answers from several engines. Those boundaries explain what the client is purchasing and which checks require additional access or a separate stage.
The executive summary can fit on one page: objective, supported findings, decisions required and next deliverable. If the sample identifies fewer than three problems, report that honestly. Filling a preferred layout with unsupported warnings creates work that development cannot meaningfully accept.
Separate observations, interpretation and proposed changes
An observation describes something received or checked: an HTTP response, declared canonical, text passage, link or identified answer capture. Interpretation explains why it matters. A proposed change is an intervention hypothesis that must be considered against the architecture and the page’s purpose.
A canonical pointing elsewhere is not automatically an error. It may be an intentional choice for equivalent content. The ticket should establish that decision and approved destination before requesting a change. A recommendation awaiting a business decision can still be a useful audit outcome.
Google’s canonical documentation describes preference signals. A declared HTML value and Google’s selected canonical are different observations. The report should identify which was examined and avoid treating a tag found in a response as evidence of indexing.
Build an evidence register another person can reconstruct
Give each observation an identifier and reference it from findings. Retain the exact URL, time, method, conditions and outcome. Save the file or extract needed to review the claim. A checksum helps identify that file; it does not establish that the collection method answered the right question.
| Field | Expected content | Use in the report |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | Identifier, URL, language and page type | Connect finding to source |
| Capture | Time, method, session and environment | Define the observation’s scope |
| Result | Received value, file or extract and fingerprint where useful | Allow independent review |
| Limit | Access, states or systems not examined | Keep conclusions within the evidence |
| Relationship | Finding, ticket, owner and next check | Turn evidence into work |
Minimise the information circulated with the report. Network logs and screenshots can include account content, identifiers or personal data. Agree who needs the original, which extract can be shared and where it is kept. Leadership usually needs a decision and its evidence reference, rather than an entire browser session.
A real sample: three public responses in October 2026
On 25 October 2026 at 03:17 UTC, we requested three public English pages on The GEO Company’s website once each. We used ordinary unauthenticated HTTP requests without executing JavaScript, retaining the HTML and its checksum. The sample describes those responses. It did not inspect robots.txt, authenticate a crawler, inspect Google’s index or test an AI answer.
| Reference and page | HTTP and canonical | Heading and observed noindex |
|---|---|---|
| O01 · Technical service | 200; canonical matches requested URL | One H1; no noindex in examined tags or header |
| O02 · Audit cost guide | 200; canonical matches requested URL | One H1; no noindex in examined tags or header |
| O03 · Technical checklist | 200; canonical matches requested URL | One H1; no noindex in examined tags or header |
These bounded checks found no deviation from the expected state. The useful next output is a retained reference and a list of checks still needed. Three successful responses do not establish an “AI readiness percentage”, or prove that Google has indexed or cited any of the pages.
To repeat the sample, use the same URLs, method and fields and record the new time. When the HTML changes, inspect which difference matters. A date, menu or dynamic resource can change a checksum without changing the passage under investigation.
Prioritise consequences, scope and dependencies
Connect each finding to a buyer task and an examined population of pages. An accidental block affecting a priority service may need immediate attention. A small editorial improvement can fit a later release. The length of the warning list does not determine its economic value.
Explain dependencies. Correcting a fact requires an owner to approve the fact; changing a template may need coordinated development and publication. Group findings by a shared cause when the evidence supports it. Six affected URLs can become one template ticket with six verification targets.
Use understandable states: awaiting confirmation, ready for development, blocked by access, implemented awaiting verification, or closed. Implemented remains meaningfully different from verified. Priority should order those decisions, with uncertainty visible, rather than hide it behind a decimal score.
Turn approved findings into executable development tickets
Include the symptom, evidence, intended behaviour, responsible component, change scope and acceptance test. Specify what must remain intact: languages, permissions, approved content or deliberate exclusion rules. Name the reviewer and the condition that would reopen the issue.
The three tickets below are fictional. We executed nine local checks on HTML fragments: the initial state, a correct proposal and an incorrect proposal for each ticket. This demonstrates those text and link checks. It does not change a website or test indexing, rendered presentation, complete hreflang relationships or citations.
| Ticket | Bounded task | Local check |
|---|---|---|
| F01 · Canonical | Use the approved destination for an example service | Parser requires the exact agreed English canonical; rejects the Spanish destination |
| F02 · Text | Publish an approved fictional capability as text | Finds “Batch traceability reports”; rejects different text or an image without that passage |
| F03 · Language | Link to the equivalent example Catalan page | Requires its exact URL; rejects the Spanish page and Catalan homepage |
Across the nine checks, each initial and incorrect state failed its criterion, while each correct proposal passed. That is a small, explicit closure test. A real acceptance method must extend beyond it when server responses, reciprocal relationships, rendered content or search-engine decisions are involved.
Keep language relationships and editorial approval distinct
A multilingual ticket should name the published equivalents. A homepage cannot automatically stand in for a missing translated service. Google’s localized-version reference explains relationships between alternatives. Our F03 example checks one anchor destination only.
Assign content adaptation separately. A capability, price or service area may differ by market; copying the same sentence can introduce an error. Development can implement the page relationship while the business owner approves the facts. Close both tasks using evidence suitable for their actual responsibilities.
Agree implementation and release boundaries
Identify who controls the CMS, CDN, DNS and external source involved in each change. Record required access and approval before implementation. A public-page audit can recommend investigating a firewall response without authorising broad changes to the firewall.
For template work, define representative pages and expected regressions to check. Preserve the earlier version and describe the rollback boundary. A code rollback and a database restoration have different effects on recent content and business records. Name who can make that decision.
After publication, keep the change identifier, observed result, unresolved items and acceptance decision together. If a dependency prevents completion, the handover should identify its owner and next action. An explicit partial delivery is easier to continue than an apparently closed ticket with a missing test.
Measure technical delivery and visibility separately
Technical delivery is checked after publication. Visibility needs subsequent observations with recorded pages, queries, questions, languages, periods and methodology. Annotate other relevant changes. One answer mentioning a brand is an observation; it does not by itself establish the effect of a development ticket.
Google’s official AI-features guide retains SEO fundamentals and does not guarantee inclusion when requirements are met. Avoid making a citation the acceptance criterion for an HTML correction. For studying answers and sources, use the LLM visibility audit guide.
A worked handover: from canonical observation to approved change
Expand F01 into a commissioning example. The record identifies a fictional English service and preserves the earlier fragment pointing to an old page. The content owner confirms that the two pages serve different purposes and approves the service’s own URL. That editorial decision is the dependency that allows implementation to proceed.
Development then identifies the source generating the tag: an editorial setting, template or shared rule. The task requests a correction at that source and representative checks across its scope. Editing a downloaded HTML file would pass the small example check without changing anything the website publishes. A real implementation must change the responsible component.
Acceptance examines the published response, expected canonical and controls that should remain intact. Where caching is involved, include a check after its update. The reviewer attaches new evidence to the same record and leaves Google’s later selection as separate follow-up. A verified technical delivery can close without inventing a ranking improvement.
Questions to settle before accepting the report
Does a three-URL sample represent the whole website?
It represents those observations under the recorded conditions. To expand coverage, define template groups, languages, content types and exceptions. Explain how URLs are selected and which conclusions the available evidence can support. This article’s sample should never be presented as a complete audit of The GEO Company’s website.
Who decides whether a recommendation enters development?
The assigned owner reviews evidence, editorial intent, dependencies and estimated scope. They can approve, request another check, defer or reject with a recorded reason. A recommendation list does not automatically authorise production changes. Preserve the decision beside the finding so the next person can understand why the work proceeded.
What should we receive when implementation is excluded?
A bounded inventory, accessible evidence, prioritised findings and tickets that support estimating the next stage. Clarify whether a development handover meeting or later proposal review is included. Those deliverables have their own value when another supplier can use them without repeating the entire investigation.
Commission a report your team can use
When comparing proposals, ask for the included inventory, a sample finding, ticket format and intended acceptance checks. Clarify which stage diagnoses, which includes implementation and who verifies closure. The technical GEO audit cost guide for 2027 develops these scope differences.
Keep the technical GEO checklist as the control inventory and use this report structure to manage the handover. To request a technical assessment, share the domain, three priority pages, market, languages and next planned change. A strong report leaves the team with a clear decision and work it knows how to finish.
